Representative Writing Projects

Report on Laboratory Animal Use: For a government contractor, wrote a 60-page report entitled The National Survey of Laboratory Animal Use, Facilities, and Resources, published by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Research Resources; 10,000 copies were printed for national distribution. The report presented and interpreted the statistical analysis of the survey results.

Pesticide Encyclopedia Chapter: For the toxicology department of a major agricultural chemicals company, wrote reviews of the toxicology of 25 carbamate pesticides, based on literature searches.

Internet Handbook for Nonprofits: For a nonprofit organization operating under a federal grant, wrote a handbook to help nonprofit community development organizations use electronic networking effectively. Wrote the text, based on interviews with project staff, notes they provided, and background materials; designed the format, which included numerous forms; and produced camera-ready copy for the version submitted to the granting agency.

Report on HIV-1 Rapid Test Performance: For a government contractor, wrote a report presenting the statistical analysis of laboratory performance data for HIV-1 antibody testing via rapid test methods. The report investigated relationships among laboratory characteristics, test methods, and the accuracy of test results in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Model Performance Evaluation Program.

Handbook for Historic Preservation Commissions in North Carolina: For a nonprofit organization working in collaboration with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, created a new edition of the handbook. Using the previous edition and other source materials provided by the client, reorganized, updated, rewrote, and greatly expanded the handbook; coordinated the review process; designed the format; selected and cropped photographs; and produced the camera-ready copy for printing by the state.

Toxicology Report: For a toxicology consultant under contract to a private company, wrote a 200-page report summarizing all information available in the literature and from unpublished reports to EPA about the toxicology of a particular chemical, to support assessment of the health risk to exposed workers.

EPA Project Summaries: Wrote a series of four-page summaries of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports on health effects research, for publication and distribution by EPA. Starting from the original reports, wrote balanced summaries consisting of an abstract and introduction, methods, results, and conclusions sections, with tables and graphs as appropriate.

Representative Editing Projects

Carcinogenesis Background Documents for the Report on Carcinogens: For a government contractor, provide substantive editing and scientific review of the background documents (literature reviews) supporting listing of substances or agents as known or anticipated human carcinogens in the Congressionally mandated Report on Carcinogens published by the National Toxicology Program. Also edit summary profiles of listed substances.

Report to Congress: For a government contractor, edited a 400-page EPA report to Congress on the environmental, economic, and health effects of changing the air-quality standard for oxides of nitrogen.

Book on Alcohol Abuse Prevention from a Community Systems Perspective: For a social sciences researcher, provided substantive editing of a 150-page book presenting a systems dynamics model of alcohol use, its consequences, and alcohol abuse prevention at the community level, for publication by Oxford University Press.

Stories from the Field: Lessons Learned About Building Coordinated School Health Programs: For a government contractor, edited this 260-page book for publication by CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health and designed an accompanying promotional brochure.

Technical Guide for Cotton Incorporated: Edited Cotton for Nonwovens, a 50-page manual to assist those interested in developing, producing, and marketing cotton nonwoven products. Edited text, tables, and figures and provided detailed critique of draft design and layout.

Journal Article Editing: Have edited numerous articles for publication in scientific journals, including the American Journal of Epidemiology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Analytical Chemistry, Atmospheric Environment, Carcinogenesis, Contraception, Environmental Mutagenesis, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Family Planning Perspectives, Journal of Applied Meteorology, Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Science, Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Methods and Findings in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, Mutation Research, Population and Development Research, and Studies in Family Planning.
