of North Carolinas Superconducting Super Collider Site Proposal to
the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
As proposal editor, coordinated writing, editing, review, and production
of the nine proposal volumes. Worked with the Project Director, Project
Manager, and Governors science advisor to develop proposal content
in response to the requirements of the Invitation for Site Proposals, with
input from staff of numerous state agencies, including the N.C. Geological
Survey, N.C. Attorney Generals Office, and the state departments of
Natural Resources and Community Development, Transportation, Commerce, Human
Resources, Administration, Cultural Resources, Public Education, and Community
Colleges; the states engineering contractor; and faculty of Duke University,
North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. Wrote several proposal volumes based on input from these sources,
edited the entire proposal, coordinated incorporation of review comments,
designed the format, and supervised production of camera-ready copy by word-processing
After the proposed site became a finalist, served as Deputy Director of North Carolinas Superconducting Super Collider Project. One duty was to coordinate submission of extensive environmental impact study data to the DOEs contractor. Worked with staff of state contractors and numerous state agencies to ensure that material submitted was complete, up-to-date, and responsive to the federal government's requirements. Reviewed and organized all materials, which included newly written reports, pre-existing documents, and maps. Oversaw duplication, assembly, packaging, and shipping of the materials, ensuring that tight deadlines were met.
National AIDS Hotline and the National Sexually Transmitted Disease Hotline Contract Proposals to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As proposal writing coordinator and editor, analyzed the Request for Proposals (RFP), prepared the technical proposal outline, provided guidelines for writers, and created an editorial style guide. Kept a schedule of writing, editing, reviewing, and production, tracking progress on each proposal section. Worked with staff to ensure that the sections they wrote were responsive to the RFP and completed on schedule. Wrote chapter introductions, the executive summary, and several proposal sections. Edited the entire technical proposal and incorporated review comments. Coordinated production with the clients publications department. Both proposals were successful rebids.
North Carolina Writers Networ Workbook, Writing Skills for Business Professionals. Under a grant from Glaxo Inc. to establish the Center for Business and Technical Writing, led development of a workbook for use in business and technical writing classes. Chaired the workbook committee and developed the workbook outline. Recruited and selected 12 coauthors from across the state, including technical and business writers and university writing instructors. Worked with the co-authors to make writing assignments, providing source materials as needed. Coordinated and reviewed their contributions, wrote half the material in the 300-page workbook, edited the entire workbook for substance and style, designed the format and page layout, prepared electronic files for film output, negotiated with printers for a discount and obtained bids, selected a printer, and worked with the printer to produce the workbook to specifications. The book is in its second edition and third printing.
